Modu, the modular cellphone jacket system we fondled in 2008 and whose release date we heard about briefly in February, is apparently ready for production.

Word came to us today via a tipster, via Israel, via Google Translate, so proceed with much skepticism. That said, we do have an article citing Modu CEO Dov Moran, who says the modular handset is scheduled for launch in Southeast Asia in Q2 (as we reported in February). The report adds that the 200 Modu employees, in addition to churning out new phones, have been asked to swap their Nokia handsets for Modu ones.

As a refresher, the Modu concept is pretty simple: Take one tiny, tiny cellphone and build a number of “jackets” around it that do a variety of different tasks. One may be an “mp3 jacket,” for example, while another could simply be a color palette swap for a night on the town. If you’re still confused, think of the Wiimote and its many worthless white plastic sports-related accessories, except in this case the add-ons do something, like GPS.

Additional BlackBerry Storm 2 specs out this morning would appear to all but re-confirm our earlier news that the soon-to-be-released smartphone is ditching the problematic click touchscreen, and will add some much-desired wi-fi goodness.

The info also indicates the Storm 2 is officially the BlackBerry 9550, complete with this:

- CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO Rev. A
- Quad-band GSM/EDGE
- Single-band UMTS/HSDPA (2100MHz only)
- Wi-Fi b,g
- 3.2 megapixel camera
- 360×480 resolution capacitive screen
- OS 5.0

We had originally thought the Storm 2—er 9550—was going to arrive in June at Verizon, maybe, but that obviously didn’t happen. Shall we try “sometime in July” on for size?

Sony Ericsson, the undisputed master of mediocre, semi-stylish dumbphones, has two more leaked handsets for your perusal. One, the SE “Twiggy,” is in the Walkman line, while the angular “Bao” seems to be more barebones.

Both leaks are missing any kind of release information, so we don’t even know if they’ll actually be coming to market. But just in case, the “Twiggy,” pictured above, looks like the winner of the two, with a big old touch-sensitive play/pause button on its front and a 3.2MP camera.

The “Bao” sports a diamond design sort of reminiscent of the Nokia Prism series but with hardly anything else to distinguish it. We were hoping the Android “Rachael” might mean Sony’s gotten a little more ambitious with its phones, but these don’t inspire much excitement.
